Score - Arsenal 3 - Sunderland 2
Arsenal grabbed their 10th straight win in a row, which sent them back to the top of the Barclays Premier League with this fantastic win over Sunderland. It was not all plain sailing for Arsenal, as at one point they threw away a two goal lead and it took Theo Walcott to come on off the bench to help Arsenal clinch this victory.
Theo Walcott who is a England Under 21 forward, missed a great chance himself before he played a amazing piece of skill on the edge of the box in which he set up Robin van Persi to drill in the winner for Arsenal, with only 10 minutes remaining of the game.
Sunderland were very fortunate not to be further behind after 20 minutes, as Alexander Hleb’s cross, which was swept into the far post by Diaby, was subsequently flagged offside by the assistant because Mathieu Flamini was in the middle. Sunderland then went on to snatch a life line in the 24th minute when Ross Wallace picked up a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area, and controlled it on his chest before he calmly stuck it in the back of the net. Sunderland were then understandably lifted by the goal and they found themselves with a great spell of possession in the Arsenal half. The Gunners were very dangerous on the counter attack and Van Persie let fly with a fierce effort from only 25 yards out following a quick break, which Gordon then tripped over.
Match Quotes -
Arsene Wenger - “At 2-0, the game looked easy - in our minds, it was too easy. But they came back to 2-1 and 2-2. Then it was a test of mental strength and resilience. Robin van Persie got a third goal - which I think was deserved - but they could have got a third goal too.”
Roy Keane - “You have to look at the positives. I keep talking about the attitude and character, and also there was some very good play today. The lads gave it their all. But you need a hell of a lot of luck to get positive results at these grounds. We had a bit, but just not enough.”
