The Ayr Racecourse is Scotland’s only Grade One racecourse, and it is situated near the superb Ayrshire coastline, which is quite famous for its golf. The Ayr Racecourse stages both jump and flat racing including Scotland’s most prestigious jump race, the Scottish National, which is held in April every year, the Scottish Derby in July and the Ayr Gold Cup in September, and not forgetting the highly competitive Ayr Gold Cup which is held in September.
There are two circuits at the Ayr Racecourse, on is Flat course which is a left-handed circuit of a mile and a half in circumference, with a run-in of four furlongs. Low numbers are said to be favoured on the round course, which also seems to suit front runners. The straight six furlongs is also flat. The second circuit is the Jumps circuit which is an oval circuit of a mile and a half with a run-in of 210 yards and due to the excellent drainage, conditions rarely become testing in the extreme.
This great Racecourse is steeped in history, and racing at this Scottish track is believed to go back as far as the 16th century. However the first ever recorded meeting at the Ayr Racecourse was by Weatherbys was in 1777. The first running of the Ayr Gold Cup was in 1804, and then went on to become a handicap in 1855.
The Scottish Grand National has now been around since the 1800’s, but it has only taken place at Ayr since 1966, once its previous home at Bogside closed.
