Having witnessed recent events in China and Tibet as well as all the disturbances worldwide during the Olympic torch relay, many people see the upcoming Olympic Games as the perfect opportunity to make a statement condemning the Chinese government’s actions. But the West isn’t entirely squeaky clean either and has many problems of its own over the years

While the normal every day person would argue that sport and politics shouldn’t mix, historically this hasn’t been the case. From the demise of South Africa due to Apartheid, to the boycotts of the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games, when the going gets tough it’s often the sport that has countries not sending athletes to participate.

The question of whether we should boycott this summer’s Olympics is a valid one that I believe needs asking, however, and there are quite a lot of reasons why it is worthy of consideration. Key questions that need answering include whether competing would be viewed in any way as approval for the host country’s actions against the Tibetans as well as other alarming things, and will the economic benefits of hosting the Games aid the Chinese in continuing to act in a manner that many find totally wrong.
