Last week was the Guineas weekend (1,000, 2,000) which is the first big Group races of the season, which gives trainers and jockeys a chance to see which horses are in early season form and also the chance to win some big prize money.

(11-1) outsider Henrythenavigator ridden by Johnny Murtagh surprised a lot of people by defeating the much fancied New Approach and win the 2,000 Guineas, The 11-8 favourite (New Approach) had made all the running in the season’s first Classic and when he went clear with two furlongs to go at Newmarket it looked like there was only one winner too be honest, but Johnny Murtagh had been biding his time towards the back of the pack and came with a storming run from deep and win by a nose at the finish line.

Things went more according to plan in the 1,000 Guineas with French raider and favourite (11-4) Natagora making all the running and leading from start to finish to win the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket. At one stage in the race Muthabara looked like he would be able to catch the leader but he eventually faded and Natagora held on to win by half-a-length from Spacious, with Saoirse Abu finishing third.
