This was the fourth consecutive Barclay Premier League match win for Blackburn Rovers, when beating Birmingham City at Ewood Park. David Bentley who is currently in top form scored his third goal in his last four matches to put rovers on their way to victory and Benni McCarthy scored a great penalty in the 55th minute of the game to seal another great win for Blackburn.

Birmingham City’s hopes were lifted in the second half by Cameron Jerome, Medhi Nafti who had strapping on his left leg after earlier slipping on the greasy surface, played in Jerome who had timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap, and he only had Brad Fridedel to beat to score, but he failed to even hit the target, and his shot smacked against the advertising boards behind the goal. This was one of Birmingham City’s best chances of scoring in the second half of play.

At 2-0 the game seemed to be beyond Birmingham City who has only scored once in their previous five matches, but Cameron Jerome gave them a lifeline when he thumped a 12 yard half volley into the roof of the net in the 68th minute of the game and this was the third goal of the season for him. Santa Cruz and Bentley both went close to making the points safe as the match turned into an end-to-end encounter.

Match Quotes -

Mark Hughes - “It was a big performance by us. The little edge to our game that is usually there wasn’t quite there in the first half, and that was maybe as a consequence of our efforts on Thursday. That impacted on us, but in the second half we got our second wind, and I thought we were good value.”

Steve Bruce - “When we went 2-0 down, we still didn’t give up the ghost. We still could have got something out of it. It is a bit frustrating; we deserved to get something out of the game. Today was there for the taking.”
