Coral Sports – "Quit while you’re ahead" seems to have resonance with US captain in the Ryder Cup, Paul Azinger after leading his countrymen to their only victory in this decade. The incoming captain that takes over Paul will be Corey Pavin.
Paul was actually lobbied by American players to return as captain next year, when the Ryder cup will be in Wales. And despite first saying that he was considering it, it appears that for some reason, Paul has refused the position, and deferred.
The Ryder Cup has been won by Europe for three consecutive times, and of which, two of the previous matches are won by record scores. What Azinger did when he took over, was to persuade the PGA of America to take a closer look and revamp the qualification procedures and process and based it exclusively on money, which probably gives players more incentive to participate.
Azinger’s leadership was also eminent. In Valhalla, he broke his team up based on their personality, and kept them together, which might have lead to better team work. And this time, even without the famous tiger backing them up, the Americans still won the season in a 12 ½-12 ½ victory.
After the much lauded victory, Azinger was hailed as Captain America much to the amusement of the media and Paul Azinger himself. Regardless, he was well received by the payers, and during the winning press conference, "Azinger in 2010" was shouted by the players, which includes Justin Leonard.
Regardless, Azinger has put together a winning team, and a formula that has seen success, perhaps if
Corey follows suit, America may see her flag flying high next year as well.
