I could go on all day writing about famous races in the UK but I just want to stick to my personal favourites which are the 5 classics that we have yearly in the UK on 3 totally different tracks.

All of which are all Group 1 races so it pits the greatest 3 yr olds at the time together.

2000 Guineas.

The 2000 guineas is run over a mile at Newmarket in the early May meeting every year, mainly a test of speed but the uphill finish to the finish line has found many a colt wanting for stamina over the years.

1000 Guineas.

The fillies’ equivalent of the 2,000 Guineas is the 1000 Guineas which is run over the same course and distance on the same weekend.

The Oaks.

In early June which is normally one of the hotter months the fillies all come together to tackle the undulating one and a half mile stamina sapping track at Epsom downs.

The Derby (my favourite)

Three-year-old colts (fillies can also race but rarely do these days) stretch every nerve as they hurtle round Epsom’s switchback mile-and-a-half. Like the Oaks this is a true test of stamina for the horses.

St Leger.

The St Leger is the last chance for horses to win a classic yearly as it is staged at Doncaster?s town moor every September and at 1 mile 6 f is the biggest stamina test of all the Classics.
