After last week’s brilliant entertainment at the Belgian Grand Prix the stewards decision to award Lewis Hamilton a 25 second time penalty which then demoted him to third position has led to an appeal from McLaren and a lot of criticism from a lot of high ranked ex Formula 1 drivers including former champ Nicky Lauder.
Lauder in so many words called the decision to award the race to Massa as either a conspiracy against McLaren or Lewis Hamilton himself calling it ‘the worst decision ever in Formula 1 racing’ and after the last 12 months with all the decisions that have been held against the team it is quite easy to side along with him.
Looking at the incident over and over again I just cannot understand how they came to this decision in the first place? Lewis correctly cut over the chicane in order to avoid a collision with Ferrari driver Raikkonen which gave him the lead although he WAS ahead going into the corner in the first place, then he slowed down to let the Ferrari retake the lead but at the next bend Raikkonen crashed leaving Lewis no choice other than to press ahead and take the chequered flag with everybody around the world thinking that was it and 10 championship points until the stewards decided to award the much publicised controversial punishment that now has a date for the appeal so at the moment Lewis is two points ahead in the race for the title although everybody in F1 knows it really and rightfully should be 8 points!
So let us hope common sense prevails at the appeal hearing for the good of the sport at least.
