The first ever Coral Welsh National took place in 1895 at the Ely racecourse and after the closure of the Ely Racecourse in 1939 the Coral Welsh National found a new home at the Chepstow Racecourse in the 1940’s. This is a tough horse race for both riders and horses and it has been known to produce some unlikely winners.
This horse race is one of the major events in the Jump racing season and always takes place at the end of December every year. This is a three mile five and a half furlong race and it is a handicap chase, and this race can give you some insight into some of the other major races of the season like the Grand National and the Gold Cup.
There have been lots of winners of the Coral Welsh National who have gone on to win other big Jump Racing titles and in 1987 Earth Summit won both the Coral Welsh Grand National and the Scottish and English Grand Nationals and went down in the record books. Some of the other horses that have won both the Coral Welsh National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup was, Burrough Hill in 1983/1984, Cool ground won the Welsh National in 1990 and then went on to win the Gold Cup in 1992 and Master Oaks won the Welsh National in 1994 and won the Gold Cup the following year in 1995.
