John Daly has lived up to his reputation as the bad boy of golf after the ‘wild thing’ grabbed a spectator’s camera at the Australian Open and smashed it up against a tree.

Daly, who shot an opening round of 6 over 78, had hit a shot that struck a spectator before coming to rest in the rough.

An already angry and frustrated Daly was then accosted by a man who stuck his camera in the big Americans face before proceeding to take a photo with the flash on.

It was the last straw for Daly who had stumbled his way around the course, finding hazard after hazard to sit in equal second last.

He grabbed the man’s camera and threw it to the ground before returning to where the startled and frightened spectator stood to once again pick up the camera and smash it up against a tree.

He was heard to offer the punter a new camera at some point but it is highly unlikely the man will take big John up on his offer.

Signs posted around the course clearly state that cameras are prohibited and allegedly throughout the day, the same man was chastised by Daly’s playing partner Robert Allenby for taking flash photos as he was putting and driving.

Tournament Director Trevor Herden was also quick to defend Daly and his decision to lure him to Australia’s biggest three events.

He stated that Daly had had a frustrating few weeks and that one rude individual clearly in breach of course rules got under his skin at the wrong time.

He also stated he would actively pursue Daly again next year and that although there have been one or two incidents, Daly has carried himself well and has been a fantastic draw card for the sport.
