Sunday’s Grand prix at Monaco was probably the most entertaining Grand prix I have ever witnessed, a race that had absolutely everything you could have wished for, and a McLaren victory like I predicted in last week’s articles.
The race had it all, torrential rain, crashes, cars sliding off the track and much more to keep the race goers and watchers glued to the track and their television sets.
The start of the race had a familiar look to it with both big red Ferrari’s perched at the front of the grid with Massa on pole for the first time in his career at Monaco. The McLaren pair of Hamilton and Kovalainen was on the second row in 3rd and 4th respectively. The race started with rain lashing down on the track making it virtually impossible to overtake and on lap 6 when Hamilton hit the wall causing a rear puncture it looked all over with Massa looking comfortable up the front.
But on lap 8 he (Hamilton) was given a chance when Red Bull’s David Coulthard and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais went off at Massenet, sending out the safety car for 3 whole laps which bought Hamilton closer to Massa, the middle part of the race was crucial for the McLaren driver because he had been fuelled up to near the end of the race so he could afford to push hard giving him a big lead by the time he came in to have a tyre change again on lap 54, allowing him to come out still in the lead and take the chequered flag for the first time in his career at Monaco.
Next is Canada and now we have 3 drivers all very close together in the points it is starting to bubble up quite nicely.
