Fencing at the Olympics is one of only nine events that have been included in every single Games since they started.

The game is played by two people, with the object of the game being the first one to hit the other in the scoring zone on the opponent.

The equipment needed to be involved in the sport is most importantly a sword, a protective vest and jacket, a mask, a glove, special fencing shoes and breeches. There are three different types of event and sword at the Olympics, the foil, epee and the sabre.

The area where the bouts are carried out is on a special surface called a ‘Piste’ which is 46 feet long and 5 feet wide. Each bout has three rounds that last three minutes each, with one minute between rounds. The winner is the first person to score 15 hits against the opponent, or the person who scores the greater number of hits by the end of the bout. If the scores are tied one minute extra is played with the first fencer to score a point being declared the winner.

In Olympic competition men and women both participate in the Foil, Epee and sabre individual events but the team event’s are split with the men participating in the Epee and the Sabre with the women just involved in the Foil event.
