The English football season came to an end this bank holiday Monday, after three gruelling playoff final?s at the new and improved Wembley stadium.
Hull City v Bristol city (Coca cola championship)
A very tight game on paper, which turned out to be the case until Dean Windass spectacular first half volley put Hull City into a half time lead and 45 minutes away from top flight football for the first time in their 104 year old history. Bristol City pressed after the break making a couple of chances for themselves, with Hulls keeper Boaz Myhill brilliantly saving from both Lee Trundle and Michael McIndoe and keeping their lead intact all the way to the final whistle, sending the Hull fans home with the anticipation of playing in the Premier league for the first time.
Doncaster v Leeds Utd (League 1)
A Yorkshire derby at Wembley was the final of League 1s playoff final and it did not disappoint. Doncaster started like a house on fire in the first twenty minutes forcing Leeds keeper Ankergen into a few smart saves at the feet of Doncaster?s strikers. After that the game was a bit of a stalemate and ending nil-nil at half time.
The second half was only a couple minutes old when a corner in from the right found Hayter unmarked who headed Doncaster into the lead. After that Leeds started to find their passing but was unable to carve open Doncasters defence who as a team looked quite happy to sit on their lead and stifle all what Leeds had to offer ultimately winning 1-nil and giving them promotion to the Coca cola championship.
Stockport v Rochdale (League 2)
This game much like the other was a local derby that turned to have it all. Rochdale taking an early lead after 24 minutes through Mcardle, then Stockport managed to grab a quick equaliser when the unlucky Nathan Stanton put through his own net after a short corner from Stockport, and with further strikes from Pilkington and Dickinson in the second half they seemed to be cruising at 3-1 until Rundle pulled one back on 77 minutes making it 3-2 setting up a tense finish, but Stockport managed to hold on, gaining promotion to League 1.
