It was already known that West Bromwich Albion was relegated prior to the last day of the season so the final battle was between other clubs hanging out in the bottom half of the table. No doubt there were tense team talks in the Middlesbrough and Newcastle changing rooms on the last day as these were the two clubs that were fairly firm favourites to go down with West Bromwich Albion. They needed other clubs to do them a favour really and obviously they had to play extremely well to get a win out of their matches. This however, was not the case. Both teams were unsuccessful in their final day’s play in the Premier League this season.
Newcastle played Aston Villa away for their last game and it didn’t get off to a good start going down 1-0 before half time and to rub salt in the wounds, it was an own goal. They only needed a point though from their last game as long as Hull lost to Manchester United which they did in the end however Newcastle couldn’t scrape a point and were relegated. Middlesbrough visited West Ham for their last game desperately needing a big win but after going down 1-0 also, it wasn’t looking promising. They did equalise though but it wasn’t good enough as West Ham pulled out the winning goal in the second half and Middlesbrough were therefore relegated. So it’s Championship football for Newcastle, Middlesbrough and West Brom next season…I wonder what the odds are for each of these teams to be promoted back up to the Premier League straight away!
