This was a crucial Euro 2008 qualifying match for England against Russia and they really only need a draw from the game to secure their place in next summers finals, but Russia overcame a slow start to snatch the victory in Moscow. Wayne Rooney scored the first goal of the game putting England in front with a superb strike, but a rocky 40 minutes followed for England and a penalty was awarded to Russia after a clumsily tackle by Rooney on Konstantine Zyryanoy. Spartak Moscow’s Roman Pavlyuchenko expertly scored the penalty from the resulting spot kick, putting Russia on level terms with England and making the score at that time 1-1.

Russia’s cheers turned to delight and amazment just four minutes later when Paylyuchenko scored again after Aleksey Berezutski’s first attempt was stopped by the England Goal keeper Paul Robinson, Russia’s second goal was enough for them to see Victory over England. If Russia now win their next two remaining games against Israel and Andorra they will qualify for Euro 2008 and England will most probably not as their fate lies in the balance of Israel and Andorra and they live in hope that one of these teams will beat Russia. When the match was over, England’s manager Steve Mclaren refused to speak with the Russian journalists, saying he was only prepared to speak to the British media and he also refused to have his comments translated an most of the Russian journalist left the press conference.

There were around 4,500 British people who made the trip to the Russian Capital to support England, but there were around 75,000 Russian spectators in the stadium.
