Only two clubs are able to qualify for automatic promotion to the Premier League and this season, that came to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City. Wolves had an excellent run in the Championship this season tallying up a massive 90 points and therefore qualifying for the Premier League in mid-April. After reaching the top flight in 2003, they obviously got a taste for the lifestyle but unfortunately their top flight run only lasted one season so they have been battling it out ever since to get back up there and the 2008/09 season seems to have bought them a little bit of luck!

As for Birmingham City, this battle was a little harder to win as it fell to the very last day of the season. One of three clubs could have made it automatically but Birmingham proved to be on top as they beat Reading on the last day of the season 2-1. It didn’t come easy though but they made it and the Birmingham City manager, Alex McLeish only needed one attempt as after joining in 2007, it was the only time that he has needed to get his team up, and what a job he did!

So that leaves just four teams the job of battling it out in the play-offs to take that very precious third spot to join Wolves and Birmingham in the top flight next season. Good luck to all you internet sports betting on Sheffield United, Reading, Burnley and Preston!
