Water polo is a mixture of quite a few sports including swimming, rugby and basketball to name the main ones, the sport actually originated in the mid 1800s as a kind of water rugby in England and Scotland.
But by the twentieth century the sport had caught on and countries such as Hungary, Greece, Italy, Russia, the former Yugoslavia, The United States of America, Canada and Australia were all enjoying playing water polo.
Olympic wise the Sport was one of the first team sports at the Games with the men joining in 1900 Paris Games, with the women having to wait a full 100 years, the 2000 Sydney games to be exact.
The present day water polo team consists of seven players, including six players and one goalkeeper. The ball which is used in water polo is normally of the same size as a football. The only difference being that the ball used in water polo is made of waterproof nylon.
The Rules of Water-Polo
This sport as you can gather doesnt have many rules but here are the main ones.
1, White, red and yellow makings are used to denote various distances from the goal lines on both sides of the field.
2, each team competing in water polo is permitted to have maximum of six reserve players.
3, at the beginning of the game, the ball is placed in the centre of the pool. Some players on both teams sprint for the ball starting from the goal lines on their sides. The players are allowed to pass the ball with one hand. Only the goalkeeper is permitted to use both of his hands to hold the ball.
