Weightlifting at the Olympics has been one of the most talked about sports amongst the media at the games regarding doping scandals, as athletes seem to try anything and risk everything just to get that extra kilo above their heads.
Having been a regular since 1920, although it actually was at the first games of 1896 and also 1904, with the women joining the Olympic circle in the year 2000, weightlifting as we know it today is split into specific weight categories. There are two disciplines in the sport the ?Snatch? and the ?Clean and Jerk?, both are extremely very hard movements in which to master.
Weightlifting as a whole though must be the cheapest sport there is equipment wise, a skin tight suit and some chalk to rub on your hands before you lift is all you need really to get you started!
The Russians have completely destroyed much of the competition over the years in the sport at the Olympics, notching up over 39 Gold medals which is a full 23 more than the 16 the USA currently have and they are in second place in the Full medal table for Weightlifting at the Games, so you can be sure of one thing in Beijing and that is seeing plenty of Russian athletes at the top of the rostrum with Gold medals around their necks.
